Jazz lovers will want to reserve a seat for the Grant MacEwan University and University of Alberta Big Band’s season-ending performance on Monday, April 12, 2010.
As has become a tradition, this final concert of the year often features original compositions, many written by MacEwan students and faculty. In this performance, audiences will be treated to original works by Canadian writer Fred Stride, MacEwan music student Thomas Hay, and MacEwan’s head of composition, Allan Gilliland.
Under the direction of professors Raymond Baril, and Dr. Tom Dust the bands will also perform original works from writers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, Domenic Spera, as well as arrangements by Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman, and Billy Byers to name a few.
The Big Band has been together for nearly 20 years, and in that time has achieved many milestones. The group released a CD, worked under the direction of many notable musicians, backed-up several internationally renowned artists, and won top awards at many national music festivals.
