A One “Person” Play starring Wendy Jeanne Smith as Nellie McClung will present the life and character of this Edmontonian who made a permanent mark on Canada and Canadian women. Nellie McClung worked with other women to fight the “Persons Case” in which women’s struggles for their rights culminated in their recognition as “persons” in Canadian law and the granting of the right to vote.
The play which has toured Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be presented at the Royal Alberta Museum Auditorium on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14 at 8 PM.
The production is not simply historical, for it weaves the interplay between a very public life and the private life of husband and children into a two hour drama. Nellie McClung was a woman of wit and master of the one-line quip, and in her dealings with the powers in Canadian society she remarked “Never retract, never explain, never apologize - get things done and let them howl!”
Jellinek House is sponsoring this play as part of its 50th Anniversary year. They operate a 16 bed residence for men who are recovering from alcohol or other addictions. Originating as the United Church Hostel, Jellinek House has encouraged hundreds of men over the 50 years to follow a twelve step program, and provided them with support in their personal situations and in jobs or education.
