For millions of refugees, getting a post-secondary education is only a dream, but initiatives like the Student Refugee Program (SRP) help refugee youth complete their education, making the dream a reality.
The University of Alberta WUSC Local Committee is a student group on campus that coordinates World University Service of Canada’s (WUSC’s) Student Refugee Program. Each year a refugee student is sponsored to come to our campus as a permanent resident and to study at the University for four years. There are over 80 WUSC Local Committees on campuses across Canada, and each year they sponsor approximately 60 refugee students through the SRP. In 2008, WUSC welcomed the 1000th refugee student to the program.
On February 26, doors will open at 5:30 P.M at Maharaja Banquet Hall (9257 34A NW) for the Annual Student Refugee Program Gala hosted by the University of Alberta WUSC Local Committee. The SRP Gala involves dinner, a silent auction, and musical entertainment. Tickets are $20 per student, $50 per adult, or $300 per table of 8. New ticket prices added for a table of 8 students (all with valid i.d) is $120.
The goal of the annual gala dinner event is to raise support and awareness for the program on campus and in the community. The SRP has been endorsed by University of Alberta President, Dr. Indira Samarasekera, as an exemplary program, but relatively few students and faculty members are aware of it. Raising awareness of the SRP is crucial in ensuring the sustainability and success of the program, which not only provides an incredible opportunity for the sponsored students, but also enriches the campus community by fostering global citizenship.
