Three accordion, three accordionists, three very different styles.
Yes, the accordion can be sexy - in so many different ways. On
Saturday, March 13, 2010, Edmonton’s Maria Dunn and Jason Kodie, with
Marie-Josée Houle from Ottawa will show you exactly how seductive the
squeezebox can be!
Juno-nominated singer-songwriter Maria Dunn bought a secondhand squeezebox on a whim in 1991. Since then, she has
built a repertoire of countless Celtic jigs and reels and learned how
to bend her beloved bellows to best effect in accompanying her voice
on songs such as: “The Peddler” (Honourable Mention - 2009 USA
Songwriting Competition) and “God Bless Us Everyone” (“The Christmas
Carol Project”, Winspear Centre, Dec 2008 & 2009; Bravo-TV “The Carol
Project”). She will leave her guitar safely at home for this
accordion-only summit.
Jason Kodie has been squeezing accordion bellows since he could remember,
lending his virtuosic sounds to a fine mélange of Edmonton bands such as
Le Fuzz, Captain Tractor, Hookaman, Allez Ouest and Les fistons and
earning a Sterling Award for music direction for Shakespeare’s A Winter’s
Tale along the way. Taking the helm himself, Jason is working on the final
touches of his solo debut.
Born in Val d‘Or, Quebec and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Ottawa’s fire
haired Marie-Josée Houle celebrates her dual cultural roots through music.
Singing and writing in both English and French, she brings the Townships
to the Prairies and beyond. Classically trained on the accordion at age
five, she indifferently laid her instrument to rest when she reached early
adulthood only to return to the folds thirteen years to accompany a
passionate singing voice she never knew she possessed. No polkas or
foxtrots for this accordion diva; instead, she combines her classical,
punk rock, and French cabaret sensibilities into one sultry stew of sound.
