The UofA Studio Theatre wraps up the 2009-2010 season with a theatrical exposé on humanity’s insatiable greed. Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan plays May 13 – 22, 2010 at 7:30 pm at the University of Alberta’s Timms Centre for the Arts (87 Avenue and 112 Street).
Under the direction of Sandra M. Nicholls, the graduating BFA acting class of 2010 is primed to sink their acting chops into Brecht’s stylistic demands with Mary Hulbert as the lead character Shen Te - a young prostitute trying to be a good person who invents a male alter ego, Shui Ta, as a means to protect herself against those who would take advantage of her goodness.
MFA Theatre design candidate Cory Sincennes has set the classic piece in a contemporary world, specifically the Chinese province of Sichuan, after the devastating 2008 earthquake.
“This disaster has left the province in ruins and its society collapsed. The director and I thought this lack of structure worked well for the Brecht’s themes of good versus corrupt society,” says Sincennes of his MFA thesis production. “The resulting design is a poetic statement of an earthquake zone, opposed to a realistic re-creation.”
Before coming to the University of Alberta for graduate studies in theatre design, Cory Sincennes graduated from Carleton University with an undergraduate degree in Architecture. Cory is the designer in residence with the Edmonton-based Surreal So Real Theatre and his recent professional theatre design work includes Grumplestocks (Workshop West/Surreal So Real) and The Woman in Black (Theatre Network).
The Good Woman of Setzuan is also the thesis production for MFA Theatre Voice Pedagogy candidate, Thrasivoulos (Thrasso) Petras, who is working as voice, speech and text coach for the show.
