Walterdale Premiere
Walterdale Playhouse proudly presents The Threepenny Opera; book and lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, music by Kurt Weill, and English adaption by Marc Blitzstein. The 83 year-young musical makes its way to the Walterdale stage to charm audiences with its timeless music. “Mack the Knife” being the most recognisable standard.
The Threepenny Opera, from 1928 Germany, still packs a punch with Mr. Peachum, head of the beggars, his wife and daughter, Macheath, the master criminal, Jackie “Tiger” Brown, and the various prostitutes, beggars, gangsters, and other criminals that fill the stage with their songs of the sinister. There is good reason this show has been staged countless times, recently revived on Broadway with Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cumming, and Edmonton audiences will be afforded the opportunity to tap their toes along to the tunes.
“Those expecting a pop infused version of ‘Mack the Knife’ in the style of Bobby Darin may be in for quite a shock. Weill's orchestrations are thick, rich and heavily influenced by early 20th Century jazz. Bertolt Brecht used John Gay's The Beggar's Opera as his source material to make The Threepenny Opera a scathing editorial on rampant capitalism.”
— Curtis Knecht, Director, The Threepenny Opera
