Walterdale Playhouse continues to help new playwrights get their works onstage with From Cradle to Stage – An Evening of One-Acts. The One-Acts were selected from an open competition in the fall of 2009 and developed from the earliest drafts with the assistance of dramaturges, through to a full production on our stage; these works have evolved from their infancy to maturity.
Kiss Within a Kiss by Jim Herchak; Dramaturgy by Tracy Carroll
What if your first kiss was a stage kiss? Would you want that to be your lasting memory? The play takes place a day before the opening night of a new play. A young actress is thrown into the cast as a replacement, and expected to perform. This last-minute rehearsal alternates between dealing with an unsympathetic Stage Manager, and actually rehearsing the play leading to her inevitable first kiss.
Sea of Green by Andy Garland; Dramaturgy by Brian Dooley
Follow the experiences of a group of people living through the backlash over a supposedly rigged election in their city. It is based upon the experiences of the Iranian people in Tehran, who protested en masse in the streets after the results of their election came back overwhelmingly in favour of the incumbent... a result that many decried as false. In the ensuing weeks, violent protests rocked the city, and the government attempted to contain the fallout by cutting off communications... cell phones were cut off, the Internet was censored to prevent the spread of information, and the militia was sent in to violently disrupt the protests against the government.
Uncle Robert’s Funeral by Erin Foster-O’Riordan; Dramaturgy by Kristen M. Finlay
Performed as a script reading, the play focuses on a woman finding herself in an awkward situation at a funeral involving a car, a relative not her own, an over helpful church lady and a surprising outcome.
