A universally-acclaimed singer who lent her voice to the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning motion picture Sense and Sensibility brings her talented tones to a special engagement at Mcdougall United Church (10086 Macdonald Drive), March 19 at 7:30 p.m. British Soprano Jane Eaglen will appear at the Canadian Western Bank Vocal Gala with pianist Gordon Gerrard as part of the Edmonton Recital Society's 2009/2010 Gala Series.
One of the biggest names in the opera world, Ms. Eaglen is best known for her vocal interpretations of demanding roles in such works as Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Der Ring des Nibelungen, Puccini’s Turandot and Bellini’s Norma. Worldwide, she's played to standing ovations in such legendary opera houses as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, l’Opéra National de Paris, Royal Opera Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Teatro alla Scala, and the Wiener Staatsoper.
On the concert circuit, Ms. Eaglen's credentials are equally stellar. Performance highlights include Strauss’ Four Last Songs with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Gerard Schwarz with the Czech Philharmonic; Strauss’ final scene of Salome with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, and Sir Richard Hickox and the London Symphony Orchestra; and Wagner’s "immolation scene" from Götterdämmerung with both Bernard Haitink and Jeffrey Tate and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Eaglen has taken part in nearly 30 recordings, including four as a solo artist. Her participation in one ensemble recording, Wagner’s Tannhäuser with Barenboim for the Teldec label landed a Grammy award for Best Complete Opera in 2003. Other distinctions include the 2008 Baccarat Award for services to the arts from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, honorary Doctor of Music from McGill University and another honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester in England.
Accompanying Ms. Eaglen on piano for the occasion is Gordon Gerrard, well-known to Edmontonians as the staff conductor at Opera Nuova. Currently resident conductor at Calgary Opera, Gerrard has a lengthy list of credits that include assistant conductor for Opera Lura Ottawa, Repetiteur for Vancouver Opera and assistant music director for the Manhattan School of Music Undergraduate Opera Studio.
