Based on the stories of Honoré de Balzac and directed by Kenneth Brown, MacEwan Theatre Arts students will create a series of shows, Droll Stories, filled with laughter, romance, and intrigue. Balzac was a great admirer of medieval French stories that were folk tales like Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales or Giovanni Boccaccioˈs The Decameron. On a more serious note, Hekabe, directed by Dave Horak, is a Euripides tragedy originally written in 424 BC and translated by contemporary Canadian poet Anne Carson. Taking place after the Trojan War, the play is a searing portrait of Hekabe, the Queen of Troy, and the revenge she takes over the loss of a son. Now a prisoner of war and a slave to the Greeks, Hekabe is forced to face the ultimate injustice.
