UofA Studio Theatre breaks the mold of the traditional theatrical play with The Gertrude Stein Project, playing March 31 – April 9, 2011 at the Timms Centre for the Arts (87 Ave. and 112 St.). Combining spoken word, dance, music and video, The Gertrude Stein Project is an interdisciplinary performance piece inspired by the life and work of 20th-century literary giant Gertrude Stein. Conceived and directed by installation/performance artist Beau Coleman in collaboration with The Gertrude Stein Project Company, it promises to be a theatrical experience of which Stein herself—known for her playful and experimental approach to art and language—would no doubt approve. Set against a visually minimalist backdrop, the characters of Gertrude Stein (played by Spenser Payne and Peter Fernandes), her long-time companion Alice B. Toklas (played by Samantha Hill and Nicola Elbro) and professor/dramaturg Leon Katz (Jamie Cavanagh) interact with dancers known as The White Core and go back and forth in time from the present day to the late 1800s and the mid-20th century, exploring Stein’s published writings and the fragments discovered in her notebooks after her death. The Gertrude Stein Project is the final Studio Theatre show for the 12 actors of the Department of Drama’s 2011 BFA Acting class. The production features set, costume, lighting and projection design by MFA Theatre Design candidate Katherine Jenkins and sound design/composition by UofA Drama alumnus Matt Skopyk. Throughout the run of the show, selected objects from one of the preeminent private collections of Gertrude Stein and Alice B.
