New Work by Tania Alvarado & Gerry Morita of Mile Zero Dance Presented by Brian Webb Dance Company January 18 & 19, 2013 The act of entering space depends upon the act of leaving another space. Tania is interested in the moment where one’s presence lingers behind and crossing the threshold transforms a new space. What happens at that moment? How does it alter an individual’s physical or emotional state? Is there a process of adaptation? How can she relate to this on a personal level? The central concept is focused on each performer’s personal experience of leaving, being left and arriving somewhere new. Whatever the circumstances of this experience may be, Tania is looking for the significance and impact of the voyage past the point of arrival. Beyond the metaphorical, she is in search of the concrete themes and realities of the subject, such as (but not exclusively) exile, migration, and adaptation. This performance also includes “Visual Splice” by Gerry Morita of Mile Zero Dance. For this work, Gerry will stretch recent interdisciplinary forays into the use of light, interactive sound, and movement in collaboration with electro-acoustic composer Shawn Pinchbeck and film projectionist Patrick Arès-Pilon. She is interested in how dance can alter perceptive awareness of the world, our relationships within it, and the spaces that contain us, including our own bodies. The movement Gerry is working with incorporates opposites - melting and rigidity, swiftness and suspension, sensitivity and violence, and negative versus positive space.
