Opening the 2011/12 6-Pack season is Northern Light Theatre’s production of Heroine, a story about the two most famous and infamous women pirates. Ann Bonny and Mary Read, have been captured and thrown into a Jamaican prison cell charged with murder, piracy, and in Read’s case, male impersonation. With nothing less than their lives and legacy hanging in the balance, they battle each other before striking a dangerous deal: one to save her skin, and the other to save her truth and place in history. Risky, cutthroat, and electrifyingly physical, Heroine invades the final moments of captivity and connection between these two remarkably passionate women. Written by Karen Bassett, Heroine runs September 14 – 25, 2011 at Varscona Theatre (10329 – 83 Avenue).
Next, from October 6 – 22, 2011 is Teatro La Quindicina’s The Hoof and Mouth Advantage at Varscona Theatre. In their first writing collaboration since 2005’s A Momentary Lapse, Jocelyn Ahlf (author of Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s, The Infinite Shiver, and The Liars) and Stewart Lemoine (author of innumerable other amusements) deliver a sparkling new diversion, shot through with so much dancing, laughter, and loud happy song that audiences will be surprised to learn it isn’t actually a musical. A trio of uproariously disenfranchised entertainers offer eccentric tutelage to a breathless new generation, while keeping their eyes firmly on the main chance. Leona Brausen, Cathy Derkach, and Andrew MacDonald-Smith whoop it up at centre stage, with a clutch of youthful cohorts on hand for extra oomph and sizzle.
U of A Studio Theatre presents Fuddy Meers, by David Lindsay-Abaire at the Timms Centre for the Arts (87 Avenue & 112 Street) from December 1 - 10, 2011. Claire has an unusual problem—a form of psychogenic amnesia erases her memory every time she goes to sleep and ensures she wakes up as a blank slate every morning. This day begins like every other day, with Claire’s husband explaining her condition and handing her a book with information about her life, but things go from strange to stranger when a limping, lisping man in a ski mask appears, claiming he has come to save her. A dimwitted thug with a hand puppet, a claustrophobic lady-cop, a stoned teenage son and a grandmother whose speech has been reduced to gibberish round out the bizarre cast of characters in this zany comedy. Each one will lead Claire closer to the details of her past life—a life she thought she had forgotten. Fuddy Meers will be guest-directed by Ron Jenkins.
From February 8 – 18, 2012, Walterdale Playhouse (10322 – 83 Avenue) is pleased to present Albertine in Five Times. What would you say to yourself thirty years ago? Would you ridicule your earlier decisions? Laugh at your earlier self? Michel Tremblay’s haunting Albertine in Five Times, with five actors playing a woman in different decades of her life, explores memory, regret, consequences, and shows how extraordinary an ordinary life can be. English translation by Linda Gaboriau.
Shadow Theatre is proud to present The Country by Martin Crimp from March 21 – April 8, 2012 at Varscona Theatre. Richard and Corrine have escaped to a new and peaceful life in rural England. But when an unconscious young woman is discovered outside their door, it threatens to unravel their carefully maintained illusion of marital bliss. Directed by Wayne Paquette, The Country is a gripping and compelling contemporary drama from the English stage
Completing the theatre crawl is Blake William Turner’s Beowulf the King, presented by Workshop West Theatre from April 12 - 29, 2012 at La Cité Francophone (8627 - 91 Street). A hero staggers back from the beast he's killed. Blood from his sword runs down his wrists and puddles at his feet. Dropping his sword and sinking to his knees, he wonders if he’s any different than the monsters he’s killed. He wants to go home. He crossed the sea to achieve glory, but now he’s cold and alone in a room of full of death. In a world of swords and dragons, Beowulf kills sea-monsters and demons, wins wars, gold and fame. But once crowned king, he sheaths his sword, and reigns in peace for 50 years. Until the dragon… Inspired by the first and greatest hero in English literature, Turner’s new epic is action/adventure theatre, a play that features shield wall battles, giant, hand crafted monster puppets, champions, intrigue, and more fights than you can shake a broad sword at.
