indie5 ushers in its 4th season with innovation, comedy, social commentary and the supernatural. With an eye on quality over quantity, indie5 is thrilled to present 3 evocative new works from professional, award winning, Edmonton independent theatre artists and offers two new events to round out the 5 in indie5.
indie5 will heat up December with theatre no. 6’s controversial production of U: The Comedy of Global Warming written and directed by Ian Leung. This multi-media play about the next apocalypse stars Clinton Carew, Tim Hamaguchi and Garett Spelliscy along with a host of scientists, political figures and environmentalists. Humourously combining documentary film with live theatre, U: promises to both entertain and provoke.
Garnering a reputation as a breeding ground for new work, indie5 is pleased to announce that we’ve partnered up with the Alberta Playwrights’ Network in early 2010. A work by local playwright Leslea Kroll will receive workshop support from the APN followed by a reading event like no other. With an indie theatre panel kicking off the evening, a reading of the workshopped play and an off the hook after party where you can drink the night away celebrating the development of cutting edge theatre, the APN/indie5 event promises to be worthy of theatre artists and audiences alike.
In March, following the sterling award winning success of A Life in The Day, their indie5 production from our 2008-2009 season, The Maggie Tree presents a provocative new script by Trevor Schmidt at The Catalyst Theatre. This play will explore the fictional meeting between two women, 20 years after their crime. What do two people who once clung so desperately to each and felt such passion together say after years of isolation and repentance? Starring Kristi Hansen and Vanessa Sabourin and directed by Sandra Nicholls.
With the Spring comes suspense and the supernatural at indie5. elementary particles theatre presents a new play written and performed by Catherine Walsh and James Hamilton. Housebound explores the psychological and the paranoia that accompanies the breakdown of a long-term relationship as it moves into a “new” home.
The season finishes up in the summer with a special event that we’re currently keeping under wraps. So keep your eyes on the indie5 website and keep your ear to the ground – secrets always- eventually- surface.
Season Passes to the indie5 season are General $45 for all 3 plays + 2 events, Students $30 for all 3 plays + 2 events. Individual tickets are $20 General, $15 Students/Seniors.
