INDiE5 2010 | 2011: Theatre in High Gear
Celebrating 5 years of Breaking Ground and Breaking the Rules.
iNDiE5 ushers in its 5th season with existentialism, experimentation, innovation and intrigue. Edmonton’s independent theatre season celebrates 5 years with evocative productions from professional, award wining, Edmonton independent theatre artists.
The season kicks off in December with Beckett’s Shorts – A Study of Literary Genius at the Varscona Theatre (10329 83rd Ave), from December 2 to 12 at 7:30pm (Sunday matinee at 2pm). Presented by Surreal SoReal Theatre, it will be an evening of nine short plays by one of the greatest writers of the 20th century directed by nine of Edmonton’s hottest directors including Vincent Forcier, Jon Lachlan Stewart, Mieko Ouchi, Mitchell Cushman, and Dave Horak.
iNDiE5 will also bring two new play opportunities into fruition in the month of February. First, elevate your heart and mind with Isis Productions’ new site-specific theatre installation Love in an Elevator on February 13, 2011 written and directed by Melissa Thingelstad. Exploring connections in an environment where most of us choose to isolate ourselves, audiences of 5 per show will embark on a brief encounter with love in a very public, very intimate space. Later that month, iNDiE5 will partner up with the Alberta Playwrights’ Network for a second time to bring you Breaking Ground – an indie theatre panel followed by a new play reading that will be a part of next year's iNDiE5 season.
In March, following the sterling award winning success of Folie à Deux, The Maggie Tree presents the Edmonton premiere of Shatter by Trina Davies at the Catalyst Theatre (8529 Gateway Blvd). Running from March 10 to 19 at 8pm (March 13 matinee at 2pm). Directed by Kristi Hansen and Vanessa Sabourin, Shatter explores the little-known details of the aftermath of the largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima, the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and asks the question; can courage and truth overcome fear and loss?
Grief. Betrayal. Death. Does it ever change? With the spring comes a new take on a well-known classic. Hambones presents a new production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, April 7 to 17 at 8pm. Venue to be announced. Featuring Ntara Curry as Hamlet and directed by Elizabeth Day. Hamlet being by played by a woman may change the story... It might not.
