Mia Ohki found her way back to art in a roundabout way. “My first passion has always been art, and that is how everything started,” recounts Ohki. She had always taken every opportunity to develop her own style – from art classes as an inquisitive five-year old, all the way to her first year of University in MacEwan’s Fine Arts Program. For many young artists, deciding to pursue a career as an artist can be fraught with uncertainty, which led Ohki down a more traditional academic path following her first year: she started with Nutrition and Food Science at University of Alberta, landing briefly in General Sciences at MacEwan again, and then driving down to Arizona to supplement her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Arizona State University.

For Ohki, her work is largely a mirror, reflecting her own life and experiences. “I channel my emotions into my work, and most of the time, without intending to, the characters and scenes I draw reflect my mood. Because I express my feelings genuinely in the illustrations, I find that black and white is the best way to keep the ideas simple and relatable.”
