After many years of playing together in various combinations, bassist Joe Fonda, pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Harvey Sorgen have formed Dreamstruck, a new trio and a new recording exemplifying lyrical beauty and masterfully controlled power in a superb album of creative free jazz, a remarkable example of the modern piano trio.
All three members of the trio have worked with a list of important and impressive artists such as Paul Motian, Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, Barry Altschul, Dave Douglas, Gary Peacock, Karl Berger, Ahmad Jamal and a host of others. Through many years of touring and recording, the members of this trio have left an indelible mark on the history of jazz and improvised music.
All three players are idiosyncratically original in their approaches. The same can be said of their collective sound. Austere for the most part, the music benefits from a ruminative patience of delivery and the fortuitous entanglement of three strong musical personalities. The group demonstrates collaboration at its finest. They offer distinctive and fascinating interplay that explores the contours of romance, blues, free playing, and abstraction.
Marilyn Crispell - with six ECM Records in her catalogue, amongst them working solo and with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock - has a way of distinguishing herself in a piano trio outing, with wandering lines and crisp interjections, and surprises lurking around every corner.
Drummer Harvey Sorgen also boasts an impressive resume. His highest profile work might be a handful of recordings with the Jefferson Airplane offshoot Hot Tuna, followed by a number of releases with bassist Joe Fonda and the Fonda/Stevens Group.
Joe Fonda is now well-known to Yardbird Suite audiences. He has performed here many times over the years including multiple gigs with guitarist Michael Musillami, pianist Carlo Morena, and drummer Barry Altschul. In addition, he has collaborated and performed with such artists as Archie Shepp, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Barron, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Curtis Fuller, Bill Dixon, Han Bennink, Randy Weston, Gebhard Ullmann, Carla Bley, and Billy Bang. He was also the bassist with the renowned Anthony Braxton sextet, octet, and tentet from 1984 through 1999.
