Cinematic Folk with a wisp of theremin
Leaf Rapids Music
The wildly isolated nature of Manitoba inspires Keri and Devin Latimer’s musical project, Leaf Rapids. Think of a warm layered blanket of bass, guitars and drums, and add the voice of Keri Latimer and the haunting sound of the Theremin. Keri has that pure-as-the-mountain-air singing voice that great folk-roots songs are made of. She has great skills on the Theremin, and she can write a song so perfect you’ll swear it was traditional. Devin is an excellent bass player, who is also a physics professor, who is also one of the sharpest festival artistic directors in the country (Trout Forest Music Festival, Ontario).
One of the experiments while recording their latest album Citizen Alien, was getting the vocals recorded first rather than leaving them until the end. It helps keep that intimate and more laid-back flavour. Instead of getting too big, all songs seem like intimate stories. Like little films. The band explores Keri's family history through a collection of tales they delved into after learning that her soft-spoken great-grandmother once stabbed a man with barbershop shears. Many families will be able to relate to stories of journeys overseas and the struggle of starting a new life in a foreign land. There are moments of dark history, but ultimately the record aims to celebrate the hope and wisdom of their ancestors.
“... so hauntingly beautiful that words do not do justice. Theremin, soothing vocals and a perfectly performed bass part made for a spellbinding, sublime performance.”
