New Moon Folk Club presents Locarno on Friday, October 4th - 7:30PM at St. Basil's Cultural Centre, 10819 71 Ave
Groove heavy mix of Mexican Folk, Cuban Son and Latin Soul.
Locarno is the Latin project of JUNO Award winning musician Tom Landa, leader of the wildly popular folk roots band The Paperboys - playing at the New Moon later this season!
Like Tom, Locarno’s music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City, and moved to Canada in his teens. A record by Los Lobos eventually brought him “back home”. He rediscovered his musical roots and began his musical quest to not only learn more about this music, but also write and arrange songs in the genre. The sound is a mix of Son Jarocho inspired folk tunes with Afro-Cuban rhythms, and their first album was nominated for a WCMA and garnered rave reviews.
This highly danceable and joyful fusion of Jarocho music, Cuban salsa and contemporary pop is of course best enjoyed live, and not surprisingly Locarno has emerged as a unique and highly requested band on the Canadian festival and concert circuits.
Tickets are $23, and $27 at the door (subject to availability), plus applicable service charges.
