To open the 2019/2020 season at the Yardbird Suite, we are pleased to present the Luca Nostro Quintet.

Luca Nostro is a guitar player and composer from Rome who is very active both in jazz and contemporary classical music. He will be backed by four outstanding musicians from Montreal.

Nostro has released several albums as a leader featuring some of the most acclaimed musicians on the contemporary jazz scene, such as Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley, Antonio Sanchez, Mark Turner, Dan Weiss, Tyshawn Sorey, John Escreet and Joe Sanders.

His most recent CD of new contemporary jazz is “Are You OK?” which was inspired by the New York music scene and received a four star review from Downbeat magazine. Luca’s compositional approach is that of building lively, flowing musical structures, interwoven with short and punchy themes, bordering on pop. The improvised performance develops from a flow of fresh and simple melodic patterns and rhythmic riffs, elaborately entwined with an exalting interplay between the musicians. The music of “Are You OK?” is also inspired by works of Steve Reich, Frank Zappa and others.

Although he will be presenting the jazz side of his musical identity at the Yardbird Suite, Luca Nostro is also highly regarded on the European classical music scene including being the first electric guitarist of the Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble (PMCE) in Rome as well as being a sound designer and composer for movies and videos.

Tickets - $24.00 for EJS members ($4 difference reimbursed at the door); $28.00 for non-members/guests, plus applicable fees.
