EDMONTON JAZZ PIANIST MBOYA NICHOLSON, A STUDENT OF ELLIS MARSALIS PRESENTS CONCERT IN TRIBUTE TO PIONEERS OF JAZZ
October 25th - 7:30PM at Muttart Hall (10050 MacDonald Dr)

Edmonton jazz pianist Mboya Nicholson, former student of jazz great Ellis Marsalis, and Alberta jazz masters Charlie Austin and Bill Richards, performs classic jazz pieces by seminal figures, including Abbey Lincoln, Mary Lou Williams, and others, as well as Mboya’s original compositions.

Pianist Mboya Nicholson takes what he learned during his years living and studying in New Orleans with jazz greats like Ellis Marsalis, in his interpretation of the repertoire, which comes from a variety of legendary composers, from the lesser known but integral Irene Higginbotham, to the legendary composer/artists Abbey Lincoln and Melba Liston. Mboya also plays his own compositions, which are influenced by the great American songbook tradition, as well as the works of Abbey Lincoln, Ellis Marsalis and more.

Jazz pianist Mboya Nicholson has worked with conductor Colin Mendez Morris, founder of the Session Orchestra. Mboya has written string arrangements for various recording projects produced by Morris. Now living in Edmonton, Mboya is currently composing music for a playwright’s upcoming work, while performing solo and with a jazz trio..
