Equally formidable on the piano and the Hammond B3 organ, Mike LeDonne made his reputation in the 1990s as an ace accompanist touring and recording with jazz legends such as Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, and Benny Golson. He started establishing himself on the Hammond organ around the turn of the century, announcing his arrival as a major new voice with 2004’s “Smokin’ Out Loud” on Savant, a session featuring the band performing at the Yardbird Suite.
Recording prolifically for Savant, the all-star Groover Quartet has earned renown as one of the most exciting organ combos on the scene.
Each player brings a wealth of Hammond organ experience to this state-of-the-art ensemble. A protégé of Charles Earland, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander made his recording debut with the Earland in 1991, and went on to perform and record with Melvin Rhyne and Jimmy McGriff. Guitarist Peter Bernstein has also recorded with Rhyne, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Larry Goldings, a Hammond organ innovator and bandmate in a celebrated, long-running collective trio with Bill Stewart. And Joe Farnsworth played with Big John Patton as a house drummer at Augie’s in New York City, while earning his Hammond organ stripes with LeDonne.
“This is groove music that’s fun and good for the soul.”
