Amy Helm Music
Amy Helm is blessed with a commanding, deeply expressive voice and an extraordinary songwriting skill that draws upon a deep well of American musical traditions.
She played her first gig in her early teens in a Manhattan bar and her talents soon found a home in the New York-based Ollabelle, whose three acclaimed albums and countless live gigs saw her evolve into a confident, charismatic performer.
She worked extensively with her father, musical icon Levon Helm, who passed away in 2012. Amy sang and played in his band, played on and co-produced his Grammy-winning comeback album, and helped organize the legendary Midnight Ramble concerts at Levon's home studio in Woodstock.
This Too Shall Light, the follow up of her successful solo debut, is her latest album. On this album two songs in particular pay homage to Levon — “The Stones I Throw,” and the closing traditional number, an a cappella version of the hymnal “Gloryland,” which was passed from father to daughter.
The album is rich with streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel. Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Joe Henry, with whom she jointly arranged a diverse collection of songs for the record, produced it. Amy Helm’s voice veers from commanding to pleading within a single soulful verse, and you’ll hear the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. And sentimentally, it’s a sound that represents the feeling of community.
Tickets are $28, or $32 at the door (subject to availability), plus applicable service charges.
