Between 1955 and 1975 the Adderley Brothers, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and Nat Adderley shook up the world of jazz with their blistering mastery of bebop and swing, and their soulful commitment to the blues, pioneering a sub-genre of jazz called "Soul Jazz". Whether they were performing burning swing standards like "The Way You Look Tonight" or delving into the blues with "Work Song" or playing funky material ala "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", the Adderley Brothers were innovators and entertainers, bringing a toe tapping joy to the world of mainstream jazz.
On January 18th, two prominent Edmonton based jazz brothers, Don and Doug Berner recreate some of the most famous arrangements the Adderley Brothers had in their repertoire and invoke some of the fiery energy that the Adderleys brought to the stage as "The Berner Brothers Play the Music of the Adderley Brothers". No strangers to jazz audiences in Edmonton, Doug and Don Berner are both native to and long-time residents of the city and have both toured nationally and internationally, been featured on live CBC broadcasts, appeared with dozens of jazz luminaries and led their own bands extensively, including a sold out show of "The Berner Brothers playing the music of the Brecker Brothers" at the Yardbird Suite a few years ago.
Be sure to come out for a night of hard swinging, soulful, bluesy bop!
