September 27 to October 13, 2018 at the Varscona Theatre, 10329 83 Ave
Not seen since 2003, this Lemoine caper is set in the world of magazine publishing in 1950s Manhattan. A famous literary hoax begets a further series of deceptions, misunderstandings, and outright lies, until things come to a head in the smallest hotel room in New York.
Northern Light Theatre - Origin of the Species by Bryony Lavery
October 11 to 27, 2018 at Studio Theatre, ATB Financial Arts Barns 10330 84 Ave
In Bryony Lavery's quirky Origin of the Species, ardent archaeologist Molly, digging for prehistoric man in Olduvai Gorge finds instead a four-million-year old female body. Upon kissing her lips, the four million year old woman comes to life, and is smuggled back to England and named Victoria, after Molly’s grandmother. Once in possession of this anthropological miracle, Molly spends New Year’s Eve seeking to teach Victoria what it means to be a woman in the 21st Century, and incidentally gains much more than she expected.
Workshop West Playwrights' Theatre - Matara by Conni Massing
November 28 to December 9, 2018 at the Backstage Theatre, 10330 84 Ave
An elephant keeper, a security guard and a marketing consultant, all with very different perspectives on animals, deal with a looming crisis at the zoo where they work.
Shadow Theatre - Miss Teen by Michele Riml
January 23 to February 10, 2019 at the Varscona Theatre, 10329 83 Ave
When her awkward daughter wins the local Miss Teen Pageant, a struggling single mother seizes the opportunity to improve her family’s difficult circumstances. Miss Teen is a funny, tender play about class, success and the bonds of family.
U of A Studio Theatre - All for Love by John Dryden
February 6 to 16, 2019 at the Timms Centre for the Arts
All for Love engages us in the last hours of Antony and Cleopatra as they embrace the consequences of putting love before politics and passion before honor. They find each other but lose the world. All for Love is a highly stylized example of Augustan Poetry and steeped in theatrical practice and traditions of the British Restoration - a period which saw both high idealization, and tremendous innovation.
Walterdale Theatre - The Attic, the Pearls, and Three Fine Girls by Martha Ross, Alessa Dufresne, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Jennifer Brewin, Alisa Palmer and Leah Cherniak
April 3 - 13, 2019 at the Walterdale Theatre, 10322 83 Ave
With the death of their Father, Jayne Fine, JoJo Fine and Jelly Fine are left peculiar instructions to host a “wild party” of a funeral, the ensuing wild romp through the attic of their childhood home sees the Fine sisters do battle with themselves and each other, regressing, expressing and exploding, as they grasp and test the bonds of sisterhood and the unity they share as they grieve the loss of their Father, and come to terms with their own identities.
