2018 Juno Nominee for Jazz Album of the Year: Solo
Since taking the vital step to relocate from Montreal to New York City three years ago, saxophonist/composer Chet Doxas has hit the ground running. Whether it be with Carla Bley, Dave Douglas or musicians such as Kid Koala and Rufus Wainwright, Doxas is quickly becoming one of the most important and integral voices in instrumental music today.
Drawing from his background in the visual arts, he has seamlessly fused his love of painting and music. The result is his new release "Rich in Symbols" which is inspired by the art movement of New York City's Lower East Side between the years 1975 and 1985. "Rich in Symbols", which received a four star review in Downbeat, captures an innovative musician on the rise, fueled by the sights and sounds of the city.
The music that Doxas has composed for this recording and live show was written by ear while standing in front of his favorite paintings in various museums throughout New York City. During the live performance, the paintings are projected behind the ensemble as the band performs the corresponding "soundtrack." Some of the artists that are featured are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Fab 5 Freddy and Robert Mapplethorpe. Think of it as "Pictures at an Exhibition" gone 80s.
For this special performance at the Yardbird Suite, Chet we be joined by Brad Shepik, Rob Ritchie, Zack Lober and Jerad Lippi.
Tickets are $28, plus applicable fees.
