INTERNATIONAL JAZZ SERIES
From San Francisco
PAUL MCCANDLESS WITH THE CHARGED PARTICLES TRIO
Paul McCandless - saxophones, oboe, bass clarinet
Murray Low - piano
Aaron Germain - bass
Jon Krosnick - drums
A master of soprano saxophone, oboe, bass clarinet, and English horn, Paul McCandless is co-founder of the jazz supergroup, Oregon, which is now into its fifth decade and continues to tour outside the U.S. occasionally. He has been a multi-time winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll and has collaborated with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Bela Fleck, and numerous other greats of jazz.
Over the years, McCandless has also released a series of solo records of his own compositions: mixtures of complexly orchestrated funky electric jazz, gorgeous ballads, pure improvisation, and genres that have no names. During a distinguished career spanning over four decades, Paul McCandless has brought the soaring lyricism in his playing and composing to the ensemble sound of two seminal iconic bands of jazz: the original Paul Winter Consort and the relentlessly innovative quartet, Oregon.
His current collaboration with Charged Particles showcases his music with a fresh twist and new energy. The Washington City Paper said “this is serious jazz, intricate, and surprisingly aggressive,” and audiences are always on their feet for standing ovations at the ends of concerts, knowing they have heard what writer Bill Milkowski called in Downbeat Magazine “something special.”
The music being played traverses a wide range of genres, including swinging jazz, funky fusion-ish tunes, romantic ballads, purely improvised adventures, and original McCandless styles that have no names.
Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Charged Particles features three of the country's virtuosos playing jazz while crossing stylistic boundaries and blending diverse traditions to create engaging new sounds. Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisational skills. Aaron Germain is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist. Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, these players are making some of the most electrifying jazz in the country today.
Tickets are $30, plus applicable fees. Members will be reimbursed at the door.
