About the Holy Trinity Anglican Church

The Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton presents Summer Voyage on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at 3pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 10037 84 Ave.

The best summer voyage is full of motion and direction - like the propulsive energy of Wolf's Italian Serenade and Holst's St. Paul's Suite. But it also takes the time to take in contemplative stillness, such as the prairie panorama that inspired John McPherson's Piece for oboe and strings. Grieg's Holberg Suite is a journey back in time as well as place, amid a beautiful Norwegian landscape.

Conducted by COE Music Director Lidia Khaner, Summer Voyage features the premiere performance of Piece, an orchestrated version of 2015 work for oboe and piano written for Khaner by her Edmonton Symphony Orchestra colleague John McPherson. “When one crests a rolling prairie hill and breathes in the boundless vista and 360° horizon,” McPherson says in his poem Sacred Landscape, that inspired the Piece “one truly experiences the Heavens meeting the Earth.”

McPherson’s piece joins treasured works for strings from the late Romantic: the Italian Serenade by Hugo Wolf (1887), the St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst (composed 1913, published 1922), and the 1884 Suite from Holberg’s Time by Edvard Grieg.

Tickets are $25 for Adults and $20 for Students and Seniors 60+, plus applicable fees.
