Vocal Alchemy presents Mozart Vespers on Saturday, February 23 at 7pm at West End Christian Reformed Church, 10015 149 St.

The featured work, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sublime Vesperae solennes de confessore, in six movements and featuring a number of Latin Psalm texts, will be paired with other classical sacred “mini-masterworks” performed by both Vocal Alchemy and guests Chronos Vocal Ensemble, a cappella and with organ accompaniment. The program will also feature a chamber orchestra of local professionals led by concertmaster Aaron Au, along with organist Joachim Segger, soprano Cara Lianne McLeod, mezzo-soprano Kristina Alexander, tenor Oliver Munar, and baritone Jihwan Cho.
Guest chamber choir Chronos Vocal Ensemble was founded in 2013 by Jordan Van Biert, and is one of Canada’s premiere non-professional choirs, having won the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs in 2015. This is a sixth-annual collaboration between the two ensembles to produce a major work with orchestra under Van Biert’s direction, presenting a stunning choral performance by the combined 120-some singers. “These concerts are a major highlight for me every year,” says Van Biert; “The collaboration between these two groups has resulted in some really wonderful performances.”

The program will pair the Mozart Vespers with a half-concert of favourite sacred anthems, motets and excerpts from masterworks, including Rutter’s The Lord is my Shepherd, Mendelssohn’s He, Watching over Israel (from Elijah), and Durufle’s Ubi Caritas. Chronos Vocal Ensemble will include an excerpt from Ottawa composer Nicholas Piper’s The Delight of Paradise, which was given its Edmonton premiere by the chamber choir in January.

This evening with Vocal Alchemy and guests promises a musical experience that will energize and satisfy the heart and soul.

Tickets are $17 for Adults and $15 for Students/Seniors in advance, plus applicable fees.
