When guitarist Michael Musillami and bassist Rich Syracuse joined forces in 2015, both improvisors realized the magical chemistry they shared on the bandstand and agreed to take their music into the studio.

In 2016 the duo released “Of the Night, The Music of Wayne Shorter” on the Playscape Recordings label and in 2017 the duo released “Bird Calls, The Music of Charles Mingus”, also on Playscape. Both releases received 4 star reviews in Downbeat magazine.

The duo has started their next project with an offering of music by piano great Bill Evans. Musillami and Syracuse with go back into the studio in mid-March with an eye on another recording set for release in fall of 2019.

On “Of the Night”:

“Michael Musillami stretches guitar artistry as exemplified by Joe Pass - sans chordal counterpoint - into outer realms of lyrical abstraction on “Of the Night”. Casting long, single-note lines that climb, lope and spin from their familiar themes for destinations unexpected, Musillami uses his nuanced touch, pearly sound, tuneful instincts and rhythmic musicality to fine effect, matched by responsive bassist Rich Syracuse.” - Howard Mandel, Downbeat

On opening track, Footprints: “It is a spacious rendition, patient in its delivery - a Zen exploration of the permutations of the tune, a journey that wanders some back roads, alleys and roundabouts, with multiple re-visitations to the melody's main thoroughfare.” - Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

On “Bird Calls”:

“This is an amazing album!” - Dave Rogers, WTJU, Charlottesville, Virginia

“As he has on album after album, Musillami demonstrates how much feeling he can pour into an unadorned electric guitar signal.” - James Hale, Downbeat
