The River City Big Band presents Oh Canada! A Celebration of Canadian Big Band Jazz featuring special guest Kent Sangster, saxophonist - on February 20 at 730PM at Timms Centre for the Arts, 87th Ave & 112 St.

Doors at 7PM

For over a century the big band has been a major contributor to music across the globe. While it is often recognized as being a true American music tradition, its influence has been far reaching. Canada is no stranger to jazz and the big band genre, from the big bands of the war years including Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, Mart Kenney and his Western Gentlemen, Vancouver’s Dal Richards and Alberta’s Paul Perry to the big bands of the 60s, 70s and 80s with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, and the Tommy Banks Big Band.

Edmonton’s premiere big band, the River City Big Band, presents “Oh Canada! A celebration of Canadian Big Band Jazz”, a musical look at the composers, arrangers, performers and band leaders that helped shape the big band movement in Canada. The concert features Edmonton’s own saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Kent Sangster. Kent is considered to be one of Canada’s foremost saxophonists, having performed across the nation and abroad in the United States and Europe, as both a soloist and leader of the Obsessions Octet.

Join the group as it musically (and metaphorically) travels across Canada, exploring the rich history that has defined our Canadian big band tradition.

Guest Artist: Kent Sangster - Juno Award-nominee Kent Sangster has been a prominent member of Canada’s jazz scene for almost 20 years as a saxophonist, educator, bandleader, composer-arranger, and producer. Having released five original jazz albums and performed and recorded with some of Canada’s top jazz personalities, Kent is considered one of Canada’s finest jazz saxophonists.

Tickets are $25.00, plus applicable fees.
