Intimate and mercurial, the Satoko Fujii/Joe Fonda Duo features the adventurous musical exchange between two masters of their art. Pianist Fujii and bassist Fonda tap a rich vein of musical understanding in this collaboration showcasing a lifetime of experience and artistry. The woody sound, intense physicality, and percussive quality of Fonda’s bass contrasts beautifully with Fujii’s more flowing lines.

The duo has released two recordings, 2016’s “Duet” and “Mizu” in 2018. “Duet” captured their second ever performance together. The rapport between them is magical and they seem to anticipate each other, sometimes spontaneously playing the same phrases at the same time, finishing each other’s thoughts, or concluding independent lines simultaneously.

The Japanese celebrate a person’s 60th birthday as kanreki, a time when one circle of life is completed and another begins. Fujii honoured the tradition with an audacious undertaking - the release of a CD of new music for each month of her kanreki year of 2018. On “Mizu”, Fujii is lyrically probing in duets with bassist Fonda.

“I love playing with Joe because he is very free; he doesn’t put himself in a box, and that is inspiring,” Fujii enthused. “I am not that free. I feel like my life is a fight to get freedom. As a Japanese woman, there are so many things I learned that I should not do in society. So playing with Joe puts me in a very released position.”

For this performance at the Yardbird Suite, they will be joined by Fujii’s husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, which is sure to make the music richer and even more complex and layered.

“Duet…is a masterful outing where Fujii and Fonda work with empathy and inspiration. The music is by turns reflective and intense, always focused and often striking in its complex beauty.” - Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz
