A Joyful Noise presents The Genius of Bach and Bernstein on Thursday, May 23 - 7:30PM at Concordia University in the Tegler Centre, 7128 Ada Boulevard

A Joyful Noise - thursday choir will be performing works by two musical giants – Johann Sebastian Bach and Leonard Bernstein. They were born more than two centuries apart but both have had an extensive impact on classical and popular music. Bach’s compositions have influenced every musical genre, from Mahler and Stravinsky to modern day jazz and hip hop and even Swedish death metal. Bernstein was a very different composer who absorbed a wealth of musical influences and innovatively incorporated them into his music.

The program will include a wide range of compositions by these two musical giants, including works that range from joyful to contemplative, from light-hearted to awe inspiring. These composers pushed the boundaries of their time and A Joyful Noise is excited to embrace that same spirit in this performance. The audience will hear some of Bach’s music arranged in the style of the Swingle Singers. They will also have the opportunity to explore one of Bernstein’s lesser known works – an innovative Catholic mass composed by the Jewish Bernstein. His work, while following the structure of a traditional mass, expresses the turmoil, dissent and profound cultural change sweeping the U.S. in the 1960s.

A Joyful Noise is thrilled to be joined in concert by guest artists Da Camera Singers, led by conductor Dr. John Brough. Established in 1961, Da Camera Singers has the distinction of being Edmonton’s longest-standing chamber choir.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, plus applicable fees.
