Guitarist and composer Sam Kirmayer is touring in support of his sophomore album “High and Low” on Cellar Live. The new disc features New York-based organist Ben Paterson who was named as the first place winner of the inaugural Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition in 2018. Downbeat described Paterson “as soulful a pianist/organist as exists anywhere.” Montreal stalwart Dave Laing is the drummer on the recording. The album “casts his warm tone and lyrical focus in a different setting…a shining example of jazz erudition and maturity that outstrips his years”, says Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen in the liner notes.

His 2017 debut “Opening Statement”, a mixed set of original compositions and well-chosen standards, received a four star review in All About Jazz and also won the Julian Award of Excellence for Emerging Canadian Jazz Artists from CJSF 90.1 FM.

Kirmayer plays straight-ahead jazz with “fearlessness and momentum” according to Katie Malloch, former host of CBC Jazz Beat & Tonic. He was a 2018 pick for CBC Music’s “35 best Canadian jazz musicians under 35”.

Tickets - $22.00 for EJS members (reimbursed at the door); $26.00 for non-members/guests, plus applicable fees.
